Sabal Nook Construction
A Simple Form, An Expressive Roof
The Sabal Nook Residence was conceived as an intentionally simple home, with its most expressive architectural moment occurring overhead in the central living space. A dramatic butterfly roof introduces a sculptural quality to the home, creating a unique architectural experience within an otherwise restrained design.
Designing Through Conventional Construction
In Florida, one of the most economical ways to achieve a bold architectural form is often through conventional wood framing. With this in mind, we developed the butterfly roof around a series of triangular wood trusses, mirrored on either side of a central LVL beam, allowing the structure itself to inform the architectural expression.
Celebrating the Structure
Spaced four feet on center, the triangular trusses establish a deliberate rhythm across the living room ceiling. Conventional wood framing creates the upper ceiling plane, while the lower chord of each truss remains visible, wrapped in drywall to create a clean, sculptural expression of the structure.
Light as an Architectural Element
Concealed LED lighting along the upper edge of each exposed truss will softly illuminate the ceiling above, emphasizing the geometry and rhythm of the roof. The effect is intended to evoke the illuminated underside of a boat, where structure, light, and form come together to create a warm and almost floating quality overhead.
From Drawing to Construction
Last week marked an exciting milestone as the custom wood trusses were lifted into place by crane, bringing the butterfly roof from drawings into built form. With the trusses now positioned, the construction team is working through their connections and the surrounding wood framing that will complete the roof structure.
What's Next
As the roof framing progresses, we are preparing for the installation of the home's windows and the roofing system above. Each new phase brings the Sabal Nook Residence closer to realizing the original design intent: a simple home elevated by thoughtful structure, material efficiency, and carefully integrated light.
