Set within ten untouched acres in a rapidly developing area of Sarasota, the Old Oak Residence occupies a rare remnant of what might be called “Old Florida.” While the surrounding landscape has steadily transformed, this property has remained largely undisturbed — an open landscape defined by native vegetation and a remarkable collection of mature live oaks. Many of these trees are estimated to be between 150 and 200 years old, their expansive canopies carrying the memory of the land long before the city grew around it. From the outset, the architecture was conceived not as an imposition on this landscape, but as a quiet participant within it.
Two particularly striking oaks — each more than a century old — stand near the center of the property and establish the primary ordering principle for the home. The architecture aligns itself along a precise axis drawn between these trees, allowing the main living volume to rise along this line and frame views into their canopy. Rather than competing with the landscape, the architecture defers to it, allowing the presence of the trees and their shifting light to shape the atmosphere of the home.
From this central space, the house extends into two wings, creating a balance between communal life and private retreat. The architecture becomes less about rooms and more about gradients of experience — moments of openness, quiet thresholds, and framed encounters with the surrounding environment. Movement through the home is guided by light, landscape, and a constant awareness of nature just beyond the glass.
The property itself is rich with life. A strong population of deer moves freely through the site along with birds and other native wildlife that inhabit the oak canopy and open ground below. Rather than separating the home from this environment, the architecture welcomes it. Expansive glass walls dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, while deep canopies create shaded outdoor rooms that allow the house to remain open to the landscape. Daily life unfolds in dialogue with the surrounding flora and fauna.
Wellness and restoration form an important ethos of the home. Portions of the architecture gently detach from the primary living spaces, creating places of retreat embedded within the landscape — environments for reflection, calm, and reconnection with nature.
Above the home, rooftop gardens extend the architecture into a productive landscape. Each wing supports planted gardens where vegetables, fruits, and flowering plants can grow. Rainwater is collected and reused to nourish these gardens, creating a sustainable cycle while protecting the vegetation from the abundant deer population that inhabits the property
The Old Oak Residence ultimately seeks not to dominate its setting, but to live quietly within it — beneath the canopy of centuries-old trees and within an active ecosystem.
