LAS VEGAS RESIDENCE ( IN PROGRESS )
Landscape Architect : DWYLA
Our project is conceived as a rare desert sanctuary — an undeveloped oasis hidden within the expanding fabric of Las Vegas. Situated on one of the few remaining untouched parcels on the outskirts of the city, the home occupies a long, narrow site that gradually opens toward the rear, creating a powerful sense of procession, release, and discovery. Surrounded by development yet deeply secluded in nature, the residence was designed to feel protected from the outside world — a private retreat immersed in the raw beauty of the Mojave Desert. The architecture draws heavily from the desert vernacular, embracing the harsh climate and dramatic landscape while reinterpreting luxury through a lens of restraint, humility, and timelessness.
Arrival to the residence is intentionally understated. Two discreet entry gates lead visitors through a long promenade of native Las Vegas desert vegetation, where layered textures of cacti, grasses, desert trees, and natural stone establish an immediate connection to place. The experience builds slowly and quietly before revealing the heart of the home: a dramatic suspended rusted steel shading structure floating effortlessly between the main residence and guest house. This architectural gesture becomes the project’s defining moment — ambitious yet refined, bold yet deeply elegant. It is not luxury through excess, but through confidence, simplicity, and permanence. The hovering steel canopy appears to defy gravity while simultaneously providing shade, shelter, and environmental performance in the unforgiving desert climate.
Materiality plays a central role in grounding the home within its environment. The architecture is composed primarily of rammed earth walls and weathered rusted steel — materials chosen not only for their visual richness, but for their performance and relationship to the desert itself. The rammed earth forms the base of the residence, emerging from the landscape as if carved directly from the site. Its thermal mass naturally regulates interior temperatures, protecting the home from the extreme desert heat while providing a quiet sense of permanence and shelter. Above, the rusted steel volumes appear to float lightly over the earth walls, their warm patina echoing the surrounding desert mountains and sun-scorched terrain. Together, these materials age gracefully and honestly, becoming more beautiful over time as they weather beneath the intense Las Vegas sun.
At the center of the composition sits the main residence — the emotional and experiential heart of the property. Extending westward, the architecture opens toward expansive pool and outdoor living terraces designed for gathering, entertainment, and sunset views. To the east, the program transitions into wellness-focused amenities including tennis, basketball, and private retreat spaces that promote health, movement, and connection to nature. Water becomes one of the project’s most unexpected and luxurious elements. Two dramatic waterfalls flank the residence, creating a mirrored composition that sandwiches the home between moving walls of water. From the kitchen and dining spaces, occupants look outward toward these cascading water features, transforming the experience into something almost surreal — a mirage within the desert landscape. In a region defined by heat and dryness, the presence of water becomes deeply emotional, restorative, and symbolic of life itself.
The home is rooted in an intimate interior-exterior relationship. Deep overhangs, shaded terraces, recessed glazing, and layered outdoor rooms create moments of refuge from the desert sun while maintaining a constant connection to the landscape. Natural light is carefully filtered and controlled, producing spaces that feel simultaneously open and protected. On the second level, the primary suite is strategically angled to capture striking views toward the mountain ranges north of the Las Vegas Strip. From this elevated perspective, residents continue to experience both the distant landscape and the calming presence of the waterfalls descending from the rooftop above.
One of the home’s most immersive moments occurs within the primary suite itself. A cascading waterfall becomes the privacy and shading element for the master shower, enveloping the space in sound, movement, and filtered light. The experience is intentionally serene and sensory — reminiscent of standing within a secluded cave behind a waterfall, completely removed from the intensity of the outside world. It is a moment designed not simply for luxury, but for escape, reflection, and emotional connection.
Ultimately, this residence is an exploration of contrasts: glamour and humility, monumentality and restraint, permanence and lightness. It embraces the spirit of Las Vegas while rejecting superficial excess, instead finding beauty through authenticity, material honesty, and a profound respect for the desert environment. The result is a contemporary desert retreat that feels deeply rooted in place — an architecture of refuge, atmosphere, and quiet luxury unlike anything surrounding it.
