BLACK SHELL RESIDENCE ( IN FDEP PERMITTING )
Contractor : TRINITY CUSTOM HOMES
Perched along the shifting coastline of South Sarasota near the newly reopened Midnight Pass, the Black Shell Residence is both a response to place and a response to time. In recent years, Sarasota’s barrier islands have endured two major hurricanes that reshaped the coastline and destroyed countless homes. This project emerges from that reality—conceived as a resilient coastal dwelling that elevates both architecture and life safely above an increasingly uncertain landscape.
The home rises well above natural grade, lifting all primary living spaces—including the pool and spa—onto an elevated platform designed to withstand future storm events and storm surge. The structure is grounded in robust concrete, yet intentionally lifted so the landscape can move freely beneath it. Native vegetation, sand, and coastal ecology are allowed to reclaim the ground plane, reinforcing the idea that the home does not conquer the landscape but floats above it, allowing the barrier island to remain dynamic and alive.
The plan is organized around an H-shaped parti. One side forms a protected courtyard facing west toward the Gulf, where the pool, spa, and primary outdoor living spaces are sheltered from wind while capturing expansive sunset views. The opposite side forms a welcoming front court where sculptural stairs rise through the structure, guiding visitors upward to the elevated entry sequence. This organization creates both refuge and openness—two essential qualities for life on the Gulf Coast.
The conceptual inspiration for the home comes from a familiar yet rare discovery along Florida’s beaches: the singular black shell among thousands of pale ones. Weathered by salt, sun, and time, its dark surface develops a subtle patina that tells a story of place. The residence embraces this metaphor. Its charcoal-toned exterior and ribbed stucco façade create a textured surface that captures shifting light and shadow throughout the day—much like the ridges of a shell shaped by the ocean.
Deep roof overhangs provide critical solar protection while emphasizing the horizontal character of the structure. Large expanses of glass are carefully placed to frame views of the Gulf, invite coastal breezes, and dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior living.
Inside, the darker palette continues, creating a warm and atmospheric interior that reflects the personality of the client—bold, relaxed, and unapologetically individual.
Like the rare shell that inspired it, the Black Shell Residence stands apart on the shoreline: distinct yet unmistakably Floridian, resilient yet deeply connected to its environment.
